About Me
Nuno Crato is a Research Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Cemapre/ISEG, University of Lisbon, current President of Iniciativa Educação, a nonprofit organization for fostering student qualification, and a member of the Conseil scientifique de l’éducation nationale (CSEN) of the French Government.
His academic research focuses on stochastic models with applications to economic and social problems, as well as statistical data-based evaluation of policy measures, mainly in education. He has published extensively on econometrics and statistical journals and worked on educational policy analysis, namely on PISA and TIMSS country analyses.
As Minister of Education and Science in Portugal (2011–2015), he took office as an independent minister following a scientific and educational career. He obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics and Statistics and worked as a university professor and researcher in the US before returning to Portugal. He has also served as a dean at the Technical University of Lisbon and as president of Taguspark, the largest science and technology park in Portugal. He later worked as a senior scientist in the European research center JRC, in Italy.
A prolific writer, his most recent books include Aprender (Portuguese, 2024) and Apologia del Libro de Texto (Spanish, 2024). He recently co-authored Developing Curriculum for Deep Thinking – The Knowledge Revival (2025) and co-organized Improving National Education Systems After Covid-19 – Moving Forward After PIRLS 2021 and PISA 2022 (2024).
